The Actionettes
is an all-girl 60s dance troupe
We choreograph our own synchronised routines to songs by 60s girl
groups, such as the Shangri-Las, the Ronnettes, the Marvelettes,
and other 60s icons such as Nancy Sinatra and Dusty Springfield.
We're London-based and dance at clubs, events, with bands, and at
own club - Sophisticated Boom Boom.
"We
don't do it for cash or for fame - but for the love of dancing,
dressing up, cheap glamour and each other. We're 'strictly amateur'
- no-one has experience in dance, except for years on the dance
floor every Saturday night."
Crepe Suzette
The Actionettes
started in January 2000, inspired by a dance troupe The
Devilettes seen a few months earlier at the Las Vegas
Grind (an annual 60s garage-rock fest). After seeing The
Devilettes, the Todd sisters (Tourette
and Crepe Suzette) had to
set up a troupe when they got home.
"We
wanted to create the same 60s-kitsch brand of synchronised dancing,
together with the costumes, attitude and the strong feminine celebration
of all shapes and sizes" Tourette.
Three of the core Actionettes were in the band The
Action Time. They soon rallied other friends and then absorbed
new members from the audiences at shows - enthusiastic dancers who
just had to join in! The size of the group is now about 15.

How to book the Actionettes
Some nice things people say....
"I met
a bunch of great people in London:.. some gals from smiling go-go
troupe The Actionettes (especially a really lovely lady named Jo).
Imagine 10 or so spunky British girls, all shapes and sizes, workin'
it to some go-go hits. It ain't Shindig, but they just get out there
and have FUN. No pretense, no snobbery. For that, I give them the
utmost and highest respect. They should be introduced formally to
the World Famous Pontani Sisters in NY. Go-go world domination!
(Ah, it's really an attitude and pizzazz more than the moves...
Though the moves make everything that much more enjoyable)."
Solvej, USA
(She knows the Ponatani Sisters!)
"...thank
you so so much for performing at unskinny bop. you were fabulous
as always, and it was particularly nice to have several Actionettes
around shimmying away for much of the night...."

(About the Actionettes
workshop at Bristol Ladyfest 2003)
"...Looking back at the stage, the workshop does seem to be
having a wonderful effect on everyone involved. With each shake
of the hips, the smiles get wider...."
Clare Rudebeck, The Independent Review, 27 Aug 2003
"...The
Actionettes, for the uninitiated, are a dance troupe of fabulous
ladies who, inspired by a trip to Vegas, put on the best club nights
in London in order to pay homage to their heroines from the 1960s.
An Actionette evening, where twelve-ish ladies in wigs and spangly
dresses perform formation dances on a tiny stage, will leave you
with an idiotically happy grin for days. And if you look about you
at the audience, who are often dressed up too, you can see the joy
reflected on their smiling faces as they jiggle about to the strains
of 'Leader of the Pack' . And not only that, they have the most
gorgeous pink website, where you can meet the ladies and learn that
they all have names ending in 'ette'. Are you in love yet?..."

"Hi there
- I came to your night on Saturday and thought it was fabulous.
The singing and dancing were fantastic and I don't think I've ever
seen anything so
fun in my life. Anyway - thanks for a fab night - really hope to
come
to another of your events soon"
Jo

FABULOUS, I'm totally impressed... I'd wanna dance with them if
I were in london."
Yayoi
"There's
so many of you, and all on the stage at once, dancing in the same
kind of way. What co-ordination!"
